This phantasmagorical animated short is a superb adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story of the same name. A man is on the verge of committing suicide, but an encounter with a young girl in a dream completely changes his worldview and imbues new meaning into his life.
Alexander Petrov, the animation’s masterful creator, complements Dostoevsky’s rich text with visual metaphors that are more than worthy of the great Russian author’s work. If you recognize Petrov’s name, it might be because he also created the 1999 Oscar winning animation, The Old Man and the Sea.
