I used the link from "sunnydays" which leads to a zip file, which you can put into a convenient directory. WinZip opens it and extracts it to a .srt file.
I started the VLC player, and loaded the movie.
Plan A - For the subtitles, I went to the menu, Video, Subtitles Track, and Open File...
So then you can tell the program to go to where you unzipped the .srt file and it will then show English words at the bottom of the movie.
Starik Khottabych (1956).srt is the unzipped name.
Plan B is to make both the movie and the .srt file similar, like Starik Khottabych (1956).mpg -
or use English titles. Then the program looks for the subtitle name.

Subject: Trouble to attach subtitles to movie in VLC media player.
The movie looks fantastic, wanted so much to have ENGLISH subtitles attached to the "VLC MEDIA PLAYER" as explained previously below in various other comments. Download of VLC MEDIA PLAYER OK (advised to use this for subtitles being attached), down load of subtitles was OK, Download of movie was OK, it was getting subtitles to work while movie plays in the VLC media player that didn't work. If anyone has further information, please advise. Loving the movie although want subtitles in ENGLISH.

In any language this is a wonderful story, but even better with subtitles. Just install VLC, download the subtitles as mentioned in an earlier review and it becomes so much more clear.
Of course the Soviet state had to take its jab at capitalism and to make the soviet union out to be the great workers paradise, but hey, if made in the US it would have made the US out to be the greatest and the kids rich beyond belief and a couple of greedy little snots. I hope it stays just like it is.

I didn't download the subtitles. However, I started the video and ended up watching the whole thing. It has beautiful cinematography and charmingly primitive traveling matte effects. The mood is the same as many mid-century Hollywood movies aimed at a younger audience, such as INVISIBLE BOY or SEVEN FACES OF DR LAO. I'm going to get the subtitles and watch this again some day. It's worth the download. It makes me want to find out more about the Russian film industry of that time.
