Synopsis
D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers (д’Артаньян и три мушкетёра / d’Artanyan i tri mushketera) is a three-part Soviet musical miniseries made in 1978. It’s, of course, based on the Alexandre Dumas novel, The Three Musketeers.
This Soviet version of the Three Musketeers has become a classic and is particularly well known for its music. In it, the musketeers battle the powerful Cardinal Richelieu and treacherous Milady, rescue the Queen of France, and have a rip-roaring good time!
The miniseries is divided into three parts.
- Episode One: “Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D’Artagnan” (Атос, Портос, Арамис и д’Артаньян)
- Episode Two: “The Queen’s Diamond Studs” (Подвески королевы)
- Episode Three: “The Adventures Continue” (Приключения продолжаются)
D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers plot
France. The beginning of the 17th century. The poor young man, Gascon Chevalier d’Artagnan, is sent to Paris to join the royal musketeers, just like his father had before him. In the town of Mengue, he stumbles upon Count Rochefort and starts a fight. In it, he breaks his sword and loses his letter of recommendation addressed to the captain of the musketeers.
After d’Artagnan arrives in Paris and meets with the commander of the musketeers, he notices a man who looks like Rochefort. Setting off in pursuit of him, he inadvertently pushes aside the wounded Athos, causing him much pain. He then accidentally insults Porthos and compromises Aramis’s romance with a noblewoman. Each of the three injured men separately summon d’Artagnan to a duel.
While the men are waiting at the duel venue, a detachment of soldiers under Cardinal Richelieu arrive. The three musketeers – Athos, Porthos, and Aramis – decide to attack them, and d’Artagnan joins in.
After the fight, the musketeers decide d’Artagnan is all right and become close friends.
Thus ensues a series of adventures, wild love affairs, and international wars. In the end, d’Artagnan successfully becomes a fellow lieutenant of the royal musketeers.
