Enemies is a piercing and believable drama set in a small Belarussin village during WWII. Local villagers live side-by-side with German soldiers who are trying to get the area back to “normal.” In many ways life seems ok. The Belarussians and Germans are able to find a common language with one another. The Germans study Russian and flirt with local women.
This apparent peace is disturbed, however, when a boy from the village participates in blowing up a German train. The Germans catch him and their superiors order his execution. On top of this, the German commandant of the village is already in a relationship with the boy’s mother. Difficult questions are posed with mixed answers.
